The floating roof rises and falls as petroleum product is withdrawn or added to the tank. Floating roofs are supported with legs or cables on which they rest. It consists of an open topped cylindrical steel shell equipped with a roof that floats on the surface of the stored liquid. An external floating roof tank is a storage tank commonly used to store large quantities of petroleum products such as crude oil or condensate. However by reducing emissions the increased costs can be offset or justified on the basis of reduced product loss though evaporation a product savings and less impact to the environment.

Api 650 is widely used for tanks that are designed to internal pressures of 2 5 psi or less and store products such as crude oil gasoline chemicals and produced water. The roof rises and falls with the liquid level in the tank. As opposed to a fixed roof tank there is no vapor space in the floating roof tank.
