The book has much more of an icky cringe factor than jerry or jeremy where the salacious details are part of the entertainment of fifteen minutes of the tackiest loudest and most violent people on tv. Parents need to know that flowers in the attic is a drama based on a very popular 1980s pulp novel about a family whose children are locked in an attic by a scary mother and grandmother. Based on other reviews here the book apparently blows the film away but since i ve yet to read it i m just judging my review on the film alone. I haven t read the novel so i don t personally know how it compares to the book. Flowers in the attic has elements of dark fairy tale. The grandmother is cruel strict cold and severe looking and controls their behaviour and environment through corporal punishment deprivation judgement authority and humiliation. The film received a positive review on the cinematic addiction website where it was praised for its acting direction and music.

It s certainly not a film for everyone it deals with some very disturbing themes but it is an effective movie box office. Andrews novel passed around like a dirty secret at slumber parties and middle school playgrounds. Cathy with her long flowing blonde hair is reminiscent of rapunzel or a princess locked up in a dark tower. Incest is a major theme since the children are a product of it and the older siblings eventually become intimate though only kissing is visible.
